Tarsal Lesion

Case Study: Warmblood Gelding with Tarsal Lesion

Signalment:
8-year-old Warmblood gelding

History:
The patient was referred for imaging only. According to the referring veterinarian via telecommunication, there was concern for lateral collateral ligament involvement or possible OCD in the left hock. The horse became acutely lame in the left hind two weeks prior, following recovery from a dental extraction. The tibiotarsal joint of the left hock was injected with Equitom, and the horse has been on a hand-walking program since.

Diagnosis:
Imaging revealed a mineralized soft tissue mass in the dorsolateral aspect of the talus, causing pressure resorption of the lateral trochlear ridge and calcaneus.

This case earned 2nd place in Asto CT's Best Scans of the Year contest (Soft Tissue Category), recognizing the expertise of Dr. Douglas Langer and his outstanding team at the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital.
